Introduction to Life Domains Recap

I’m glad you’re here. Most people feel overwhelmed because they see their life as one giant, tangled knot. Today, you’re going to untie that knot by breaking down your life into specific domains. We call these Life Domains. It’s the foundational step in moving from a "desire" to change to actually taking action.

Think of your life as a sailboat. You are the captain, but you don’t sail in a vacuum. In The Practice, the water represents your environment. Just as a boat interacts with the sea, you interact with the world around you. But the sea isn’t just one thing—it’s made of different currents and territories. We move through these segments every day. We call these segments Life Domains.

To take the wheel, you first must know your current coordinates

  • What does the map of your life look like right now?

  • Which domains are steady, and which ones are pulling you off course?

  • Where are you thriving, and where are you just trying to keep your head above water?

The core question we’re answering today is: What are the most important domains in your life right now?

A Life Domain is just a way to break your life down into different activities. Instead of looking at “Life” as one big, looming hurdle, you break it down into manageable activities. This helps you stop reacting and start leading. For most of us, these activities fall into:

  • Work

  • Health

  • Family

  • Friends

  • Leisure Time

There isn’t one “right” way to categorize your life, but there is a functional way. You use these labels to look at each area with complete honesty and see where you need to take the wheel.

While everyone’s map is different, research shows that most people’s well-being is anchored in these ten areas: health, income, relationships, work, intimacy, housing, safety, self-worth, and education. At the end of this lesson, you’re going to focus on the ones that matter most to you.

As the captain, you choose where to put your focus. You can choose which domains to navigate at any given time. If you spend all your energy in the Work domain and ignore Health or Family, your voyage will likely get lopsided. Taking the wheel means learning how to move between these areas with intention.

Why do we do this?

  • Focusing on one specific activity without recognizing its effect on other areas can create unnecessary stress.

  • When you zoom out, you might see that your work isn’t the problem—you’re just exhausted because you’re not investing enough time in your health and leisure time.

  • When one area hits a hurdle, it’s easy to feel like you’re failing at everything. Looking at the big picture reminds you that, even when Work is rocky, you are still the captain of your Health and your Leisure domains. ”You are more than your current struggle.”

Personalize your domains:

A final piece of advice: The labels are yours. While we use terms like "Family" or "Health," the meaning of those words is yours to define. What you call "Community," someone else might call "Friends.“

As you move into the Life Domains Audit exercise, I want you to use the labels that resonate most with your reality, because if they don’t feel real, they won't lead to action. This is a critical step towards beginning your journey to change.
